I discussed these topics in my review of "Psycho." I did enjoy "Psycho," so I was interested in reading some other novels by Bloch. I always wondered if it was good, and how similar it would be to Hitchcock's movie. I recently read "Psycho" because I had a fairly early edition paperback lying around. Bloch fearlessly examines the kinds of manipulative, disingenuous things some people will do to get what they want, not to mention how they rationalize even the worst of acts.more There's always the danger people will think what they think is what YOU think. It takes courage to write such nasty characters. Still, The Scarf and The Deadbeat really got to me. The last story, The Couch, is for me the weakest because it goes a little too much into the Freudian explanations for the anti-hero's behavior. The author of Psycho here introduces us to three of Norman Bates' spiritual cousins, three guys with con-artist impulses and serious mommy (or daddy) issues. I would never have thought someone could write such horrible, misogynist characters and keep me turning the pages.
